Police refer ex-ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin to prosecutors on defamation and obstruction charges over claims ILLIT plagiarized NewJeans; earlier court rulings also rejected plagiarism

Min Hee-jin, former CEO of ADOR who had raised allegations that HYBE label BELIFT LAB's girl group ILLIT plagiarized ADOR's NewJeans, has been referred to prosecutors on charges including defamation. According to Yonhap News Agency reporting, Seoul Yongsan Police Station referred Min to the prosecution service on the 1st on charges of obstruction of business and defamation. She is accused of spreading false information to disparage HYBE and BELIFT LAB even though ILLIT had not plagiarized NewJeans. Police also found that charges were substantiated against two people surnamed Lee and Shin, then ADOR vice presidents, in connection with a statement ADOR issued three days before her press conference claiming that ILLIT copied NewJeans. At an emergency press conference in April 2024, Min claimed ILLIT had "copied" NewJeans' audition poster, hanbok photo concept, debut method and choreography. A month later, BELIFT LAB filed a complaint with police, saying its artists' and staff's efforts and achievements were being disparaged by reckless speculation and false claims. The referral is in line with earlier court decisions. In March last year, in an injunction case over ADOR's agency status, the court found it difficult to see ILLIT's concept as plagiarizing NewJeans. In October of the same year, in the main lawsuit confirming the validity of NewJeans' exclusive contracts, the court acknowledged some similarities but said there was no evidence that ILLIT copied NewJeans' concept, rejecting Min's side's argument.
