Asked about his first impressions of the BTOB members after joining the agency, Minhyuk said the moment he felt sure he could be there was when he saw Hyunsik. At the first meal with all the trainees, Hyunsik’s eye smile was something else, he said, and he thought the guy’s charm was off the charts; watching him practice, he found him on another level. Shown a photo of Hyunsik’s eye smile, Minhyuk said he often jokes that he wants to be caught in that smile. He also explained how he became known as the “Waterbomb god.” He said he only started working out properly after the military, where he developed a severe herniated disc and spent a year in rehabilitation. The doctor told him there was little a hospital could do and that he needed to build muscle through strengthening exercises. He began training because he did not want to be in pain, and as he saw his body change it became fun, until at some point he forgot about the pain. As his body improved he gained confidence and work followed, he said; after one big moment at Waterbomb, the festival became his goal every year, and like athletes preparing for a competition he trains harder when that season comes around.
