The music video for BLACKPINK’s debut song ‘BOOMBAYAH’ has surpassed 1.9 billion views on YouTube. It crossed the mark on the morning of Oct. 4 (KST), 10 years, 1 month and 25 days after its release on Aug. 8, 2016. It is the first debut music video by a K-pop group to reach 1.9 billion views. ‘BOOMBAYAH’ is a track from ‘SQUARE ONE’, the first single album BLACKPINK released on Aug. 8, 2016, and together with ‘WHISTLE’ marked the group’s official debut. With this milestone, BLACKPINK became the first K-pop artist to hold three music videos with 1.9 billion views, joining ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ and ‘Kill This Love’, which had already passed the mark. The video’s record run began in April 2018, when it became the first K-pop debut music video to hit 300 million views, and continued at the 600 million, 700 million, 800 million and 900 million marks. In 2020 it became the first K-pop debut MV to reach 1 billion views. It went on to pass 1.1 billion and 1.3 billion in 2021, 1.4 billion in 2022, 1.6 billion in 2023 and 1.7 billion in June 2024, again as the first K-pop debut MV at that level. At 1.6 billion in 2023, BLACKPINK also became the first K-pop artist with three videos at that count, alongside ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ and ‘Kill This Love’. A song released at the group’s 2016 debut is thus still rewriting the view-count records for K-pop debut music videos a decade later.
