Virtual Idol PLAVE Reshaping K-pop Landscape

PLAVE, a five-member virtual idol group that debuted in 2023 from the virtual world Caelum, has emerged as a game-changer in the K-pop industry. The group comprises Yejun, Noah, Bambi, Unho, and Hamin, and has earned significant accolades including the Golden Disk Award for Popularity and the Seoul Music Awards Grand Prize in 2025, shedding its virtual stigma to be recognized as a skilled idol group. In August 2025, PLAVE was appointed as Seoul's promotional ambassador, validating its industrial value. Other pioneering virtual idol groups include Isekai Idols (formed in 2021), which achieved a triple crown on Melon charts, and MAVE:, which is performing well on global charts. New groups set to debut in the first half of 2026 include OWIS, produced by Produce 101 alumna Lee Haein, and B:DAWN, a virtual male group with growing fanbase momentum. The market's scale is evident from a month-long pop-up store event at The Hyundai Seoul in 2024, which generated 7 billion won in sales. Market Watch projects the global VTuber market will reach approximately 17.6 trillion won by 2028. Virtual culture has transcended personal preference to become a national strategic industry, with China's government also incorporating VTuber industry development into its 14th Five-Year Plan. However, challenges remain, including issues regarding members' past conduct and real actor information exposure, transparency concerns about live broadcasts, and IP ownership disputes upon contract termination.
