As a devoted fan of the band Nell, he was discovered by Nell's manager while working at a cafe and debuted as an idol. Throughout his solo career, he has collaborated multiple times with Nell's vocalist Kim Jong-wan, his role model, showcasing the perfect harmony between fandom and professionalism. For his sixth mini album 'Off the Map', two songs were gifted by Kim Jong-wan: the title track 'When I Think of You' and the alternative rock track 'Model Answer'. Kim Sung-kyu commented, "I worked with Jong-wan again after five years. He is truly meticulous when directing. I learned a lot from him during this recording session." He continued, "When I was younger, recording sessions took longer and although I wasn't scolded, I was often unsatisfied. This time, everything went very smoothly and quickly—we finished each song within two hours." He added with a laugh, "The word I heard most from him was 'good'. I think I have grown as well."
