Publishing company Changbi is undertaking the 'Changbi Korean Thought Series' project to explore Korean philosophical traditions in response to global crises. The initiative aims to compile the essential works of 59 thinkers across 30 volumes over three years, targeting completion in 2026 to mark Changbi's 60th anniversary. Following the release of 10 volumes in July 2024, the second batch of 10 volumes was published in February 2025. The earlier period volumes (15 volumes) focus on thinkers from before the 19th century, while the later period volumes (15 volumes) concentrate on 20th-century philosophers. The second batch includes Volume 22 on Han Yong-un and Shin Chae-ho, independence movement leaders during Japanese colonial rule; Volumes 21 on Kim Gu and Yeo Un-hyung, who proposed left-right cooperation in the liberation period; and works examining new ideological visions and cultural possibilities by other major thinkers. This series explores how Korean philosophical traditions including Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, along with the concept of cultural transformation (gaebyek), can contribute to addressing contemporary global challenges including climate crisis, capitalist crises, and international conflicts.
