RESCENE's Minami Sparks 'Gyaru' Makeup Trend Among Korean Youth

Minami, a Japanese member of K-pop group RESCENE, has sparked a significant 'Gyaru' trend among Korean people in their 20s and 30s. A YouTube video featuring Minami in full Gyaru makeup shouting 'Geoje Yaho' while traveling in Geoje Island and performing Parapara dance became an online meme, boosting interest in Gyaru culture itself. According to Naver search statistics, searches for 'Gyaru' more than doubled from 19,000 times in March to 44,000 times in May. Social media has seen the spread of Gyaru slang terms such as 'Agepoyou', 'Paripi-ru', and 'Iketeru'. Originating in 1990s Japan during the bubble economy period, Gyaru culture emerged as people sought to express their individuality through bold makeup and flashy fashion in a conformist society. A hair designer in Hongdae, Seoul reported that requests for Gyaru-concept styling have noticeably increased, with Gyaru makeup appointments occurring roughly twice per week. Beauty brands like Colorgram and Wake Make have quickly launched products like 'Gyaru Changu' and 'Gyaru Kitty Edition'. Young people attracted to Gyaru cite self-expression and individuality as main appeals, while some note that positive perception toward the style has improved compared to the past.
