A new fish species has been discovered in shallow wetlands on Hengqin Island in Guangdong Province, China, and has been named 'Brachygobius Jennie' after BLACKPINK member Jennie. The fish, discovered by researcher Tian Jiangyan's team at Sun Yat-sen University, measures less than 9mm in length, making it one of the smallest fish species recorded in China and in the world. Through genetic testing and morphological analysis, the research team confirmed that this species is completely new to the scientific community and represents the first recorded instance of the Brachygobius genus in China. Tian Jiangyan revealed that she was inspired by Jennie's music during her research and named the fish to honor the 'positive impact' Jennie had on her work. The fish features a distinctive appearance with four narrow stripes on the back of its head, with the second stripe forming an inverted V-shape along the belly. This scientific achievement follows the 2023 naming of a rare endangered flower species after BLACKPINK's Thai member Lisa, marking another instance of a BLACKPINK member inspiring the scientific community.
